Terme conventionnel par lequel on établit ou rétablit le contact avec l'interlocuteur dans une conversation téléphonique. Allô, Jacques? Allô, qui est à l'appareil? Allô, je vous entends mal, répétez :
• C'est de son hôtel qu'il téléphona.
— Allo! ... Je désirerais parler au docteur Bellamy, s'il vous plaît... Allo! ... C'est vous, docteur? ... Je vous demande pardon de vous déranger... Je pensais bien ne pas vous trouver à la brasserie aujourd'hui... J'aurais aimé, cependant, avoir un entretien avec vous, à l'heure qui vous conviendra le mieux... Allo! ... Vous dites? ... Tout de suite? ... Je vous remercie...

Prononc. :[alo]. DG transcrit [o] fermé long : à-. — Rem. Les graph. allô et allo sont l'une et l'autre très répandues, la 1re étant légèrement dominante.
Étymol. ET HIST. — 1880 appel au téléphone, interj. (Témoignage oral enregistré en juin 1906 par le Bull. Assoc. abonnés au téléph. d'apr. Dauzat ds Fr. mod. t. 6, p. 21); 1881 (DU MONCEL, Lum. Électr., t. V, 432 ds BONN. 1920 : Après avoir crié Hallo, Hallo, on prévient l'abonné qu'il est invité à entrer en correspondance avec tel numéro).
Empr. à l'anglo-amér. (premiers téléphones fr. importés des U.S.A.) hallóo de même emploi, attesté sous la forme helló en 1889 ds DAE 1938, en 1895 ds NED; spécialisation d'emploi de l'angl. hallóo interj. « an exclamation to incite dogs to the chase, to call attention at a distance, to express surprise » (dep. Shakespeare), prob. var. de hállow subst. « id. » (dep. 1440; fréq. terme cynégétique : 1576, G. DE TUBERVILLE, The Booke of Hunting, 32 ds G. TILANDER, Nouv. essais d'étymol. cynégétique, Lund, 1957, p. 94), dér. de to hallow « to chase or pursue with shouts » terme cynégétique (dep. ca 1340, NED); to hallow empr. à l'anglo-norm. halloer « poursuivre en criant » terme cynégétique (1160, Vie de S.
